Driver & Passenger Killed in Nassau County Box Truck Crash

Two men were killed in a serious box truck crash on the eastbound side of the Long Island Expressway in Nassau County around 5:00 a.m. on Monday, April 5, 2021.

This was a single-vehicle crash that involved only the box truck, which swerved off the highway and crashed into the overpass at Shelter Rock Road, near Exit 36. The truck had Boar's Head branding on the side and was reportedly owned by Top Shelf Provisions. Both the driver and the passenger in the truck were pronounced dead at the scene, according to Nassau County police.

The exact cause of the accident is still unknown; it is being investigated by the Nassau County Police Homicide Squad. If there were any witnesses to the crash, police are asking them to call the Nassau County Crime Stoppers (1-800-244-TIPS) or the Homicide Squad (516-573-7788) with any information.

Our thoughts and condolences are with the loved ones of the victims of this terrible crash.

At this point, it is impossible to tell whether or not any negligence contributed to causing this accident. However, we do know that there are certain regulations the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has in place to prevent truck accidents from occurring. Some of these regulations include:

  • Weight limits for truck loads. Box trucks often carry cargo or deliveries. If a truck is overloaded with cargo, there is an increased risk that it will roll over or be unable to stop as quickly as needed because of the extra weight throwing it off balance.
  • Maintenance and repair requirements. Both the truck driver and the motor carrier that employs the driver are required to ensure the truck is safe to drive before taking it on the road.
  • Driver qualification. The FMCSA requires that all truck drivers hold a valid commercial vehicle license and complete a road test (among other things) before driving a truck or commercial vehicle. The employer of the truck driver also has a responsibility to make sure the driver is qualified and properly trained.

If any of these regulations were violated in the Nassau County box truck crash, it could be possible that negligence played a role in the accident.
