Brooklyn Building Collapse Under Investigation by Firm

On November 8, 2011, five workers were trapped under debris and corrugated metal when a building under construction in Brooklyn collapsed. All five workers were rescued from the rubble by the New York City Fire Department. Tragically, one of the innocent workers later died. The noted construction accident law firm Block O'Toole & Murphy, LLP has been retained to represent the worker who tragically died, as well as one of the injured workers who survived.

New York's Expanded "Move Over Law" Goes into Effect at the Start of the Year

New York State's new and improved "Move Over Law" is set to go into effect on January 1, 2012. The Move Over Law has been adopted by most states around the country, requiring motorists to change lanes when certain vehicles, personnel, or incidents are present. FOX 23 News reports that New York has expanded its law to include tow trucks, highway crews, construction sites, and other emergency (hazard) vehicles. The original law, enacted exactly one year before the extension, only covered certain emergency vehicles like police forces.

Woman Killed in Elevator Accident Just Hours After Maintenance

An elevator that led to a woman’s death was serviced only hours before the catastrophic accident, according to the New York Times. Tragedy struck when 41-year-old Suzanne Hart, an advertising executive at Young & Rubicon, was crushed between an elevator and the elevator shaft wall when the elevator malfunctioned. As she was stepping onto the elevator on the first floor of the 285 Madison Ave building, it abruptly shot upwards while the doors were still open and Hart was still entering the elevator. According to New York City Buildings Department investigators, electrical maintenance was being performed on the elevator mere hours before the accident occurred.

Fatal Construction Accident Case Concludes with $4,475,000 Settlement

Block, O Toole & Murphy is pleased to announce that it has obtained a $4,475,000 settlement in a lawsuit filed after a fatal construction accident. In December 2007, a 33 year-old union ironworker foreman was working at a construction site in New York City when the flooring he was on collapsed, causing him to fall ten stories. He later passed away as a result of his injuries. The substantial settlement was awarded to the two children the victim left behind, aged 1 and 3 at the time of the accident.
