Fatal Hit-and-Run Suspect Had Long Rap Sheet, Say Police

The suspect arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run accident that killed a Schenectady teen had a long rap sheet of driving offenses, according to police. Anthony Gallo, of Rotterdam, allegedly hit 19-year-old Cassandra Boone with his pickup truck last week and then fled the scene. Boone was rushed to Albany Medical Center but passed away shortly after. According to the Wall Street Journal, after receiving a tip on the vehicle used by the hit-and-run driver, police found the 34-year-old Gallo and arrested him. Upon a background check, police discovered that Gallo had ten suspensions on his license and should not have been behind the wheel in the first place.

$1.49 Million Auto Accident Recovery Obtained by Firm

Brooklyn Building Collapse Kills One, Injures Four

Five workers were trapped under debris and corrugated metal when a building in Brooklyn reportedly collapsed. All five workers were rescued by the New York Fire Department, but one later died. Of the other four workers, one declined treatment and the remaining three are in stable condition at Lutheran Medical Center, according to the New York Times. The building, at 2929 Brighton Fifth Street near Neptune Avenue in Brighton Beach, was a five-story building housing fourteen apartment buildings.

NTSB Study Says Curbside Buses Dangerous and Need Regulation

A new bus safety study by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) finds that “curbside” buses are dangerous and need new regulations to keep them safe. The study states that the fatal accident rate for curbside carriers from January 2005 to March 2011 was seven times that of conventional bus operations. Instead of dropping riders off at bus terminals like conventional coaches, “curbside” buses drop passengers off at designated curb spots. According to the LA Times, this mode has become the fastest growing form of transportation since 2005, but the report clearly shows that inspections have not kept up with the growth.
