Worker’s Arm Severed In Elevator Accident

A worker lost part of his arm in an elevator accident this morning at 50 Broadway, in downtown Manhattan. The worker, whose identity has not yet been released, was pulled out of an elevator shaft by first responders and rushed to Bellevue Hospital. Reports indicate that first responders also rushed his severed arm, packed in ice, to Bellevue Hospital where doctors were trying to reattach it. The man reportedly remains in serious condition.

The accident happened Thursday at about 10:30 a.m. at 50 Broadway, a 37-story office building in the Financial District. At the time of the accident, the victim, who was an employee of Centennial Elevator Industries, had been working in the elevator shaft on the 19th floor. Coworkers and building occupants reportedly heard a crash in the elevator and then heard the man screaming and moaning. Reports indicate that the man’s arm was cut off at the elbow by the elevator. The man also sustained an unspecified injury to his leg, which some reports have described as badly broken and bent at an extreme ankle. Further details about how the accident occurred are not yet available. Investigations are ongoing.
