Fatal Demolition Accident in Midtown Manhattan

A construction worker was killed and another one was seriously injured after the inside of a building collapsed during a demolition project in midtown Manhattan. The fatal accident continues a frightening rash of deadly accidents that are plaguing the city. The flurry of serious accidents comes as new construction projects continue to pop up all over the five boroughs.

Reports indicate that a large section of a ceiling collapsed on top of the two workers, pinning them to the ground at the renovation project of a posh Hotel. The hotel, projected to be a 27-story building but currently an 8-story structure, has been under renovation for almost 3 years. Filings indicate that the developers anticipate calling the hotel 'The Aloft New York Midtown Hotel.'

Emergency personnel raced to the scene on the crowded block located on W. 38th St. between 5th and 6th Avenues earlier this morning and dug out the 2 victims. One of the victims was pronounced dead and the other was rushed to a local hospital where he is being treated for serious injuries.

Our thoughts go out to the family, friends and loved ones of both victims. They will be in our prayers.

The construction industry must now confront yet another senseless tragedy. Sadly, it is another headline that illuminates a troubling trend. Construction work appears to be growing more and more dangerous. The statistics, including a 150% increase in fatalities in New York City, paint a very bleak picture. They highlight the need for the vigilant preservation of worker safety laws while also demonstrating the need for increased attention to protecting our construction workers. This is, obviously, a matter of life and death.

Demolition work by its nature is dangerous. The men and women who perform this type of work on an everyday basis are all too aware of the perils associated with it. Certain steps can be taken to reduce the frequency and severity of demolition accidents. Generally speaking, demolition accidents can occur when the proper supports and foundation are not present during the project. Why? Demo work is disruptive and the work will test the structural stability of the area where the demolition is taking place. If it is not properly supported or if there is a weak foundation, then the likelihood of a serious accident increases exponentially.

Workers are also likely to be struck by falling objects and debris during demolition because of the type of work that is occurring. The best way to combat serious demolition accidents is by having effective training, seasoned and experienced personnel directing the site, a plethora of safe equipment and tools and the right amount of planning before the work begins.

Victims and family members who have endured a serious construction accident, like an accident that can occur during demolition work, often face very trying times.

  • Will they recover from their injuries?
  • Will they ever be able to work again?
  • How will they pay their bills and support their families?
  • What does the future hold?

A blog will never be able to answer those questions, but one thing that should be clear is that a construction accident victim, particularly an individual who was involved in a serious accident like this one, should have a capable lawyer who has shown a willingness to fight for clients and get the right results. This is their lone opportunity to fight for justice.
