What Do Tourists, The Scantily Clad and Vendors Have In Common?

New York City is a beautiful place to be this time of year. The foliage has returned to Central Park and the warm air makes getting out and enjoying our city an experience to look forward to every day.

Unfortunately, this time of year also results in increased risk of injury for drivers, passengers, and pedestrians alike. What is the reason for this increased risk? Let's take a look at some of the top causes of spring and summer injuries in our fair city.

Distractions, Distractions, Distractions

An increase in foot traffic comes with an increase in street vendors, people wearing less clothing, parades, celebrations, and protests. Anything that changes the typical traffic pattern or causes a visual distraction can result in accidents. It is important to be vigilant during spring and summer months when outdoor activity is at its peak.

The Unfamiliar

You may be able to handle your daily commute with your eyes closed by now, but things are not so simple for New York City's visitors. Slow-walking tourists, confused subway riders, and rattled drivers all contribute to an increase in accident risk this time of year.

Now, don't get us wrong. We love the fact that our city attracts so many visitors from around the country and throughout the world. We truly are a melting pot of different cultures and tourism is a crucial industry for our region. The important thing to remember is that while welcoming our visitors it is a good idea to be extra aware of our surroundings to make sure we all have a safe experience.

For those other than the truly hardcore, spring means the return of bicycles to New York City's streets. This means the continuation of the time-honored tradition of cyclists (hopefully) narrowly avoiding inattentive drivers. If you are a cyclist, be sure to follow all traffic laws and use bike lanes when available. Also, it is safest to assume motorists are not looking out for you so you should ride defensively.

A word of advice for motorists: learn to share the road with bicycles. A minor scratch on your door could mean the end of their life. Please use your mirrors before turning or making any sudden traffic movements.

Get Out There and Stay Safe

At Block O'Toole & Murphy, we hope you have a wonderful spring and summer. Just remember to be aware of your surroundings and look out for your fellow city dwellers.
