Two Hit-and-Run Pedestrian Accidents in Brooklyn

Two hit-and-run pedestrian accidents in Brooklyn last weekend have left victims seriously injured and the drivers still at large, according to news reports. The first accident, which occurred early Saturday morning in East New York on Seaview Avenue near Louisiana Avenue, involved an SUV and two pedestrians.

According to witnesses, the 27-year old male victim was pinned to the wall by the SUV as the vehicle navigated a traffic circle after it mounted the sidewalk. The other victim, a 32-year-old woman, was screaming at the driver, "Move the car, move the car." However, the driver ran from the scene, leaving the victim pinned to the wall by the Mercury Mountaineer. It was later reported that both of his legs had to be amputated because of the severity of the trauma he suffered.

The second hit-and-run occurred in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn early the following morning. The victim, a 26-year-old woman, was walking under the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (BQE) when she was struck by what was described as a dark blue sedan at the intersection of Manhattan Avenue and Meeker Avenue, according to police reports. The vehicle sped off after hitting the victim.

She was taken to Elmhurst Hospital with serious. People who live in the area said that although the intersection is not especially dangerous, but because cars drive much faster at night because of reduced traffic, it is easier to not see them until it's too late.

Hit-and-run accidents are apparently on the rise. A 2013 report revealed that nearly half of all traffic accidents in Los Angeles involve hit and run drivers, with 4,000 incidents resulting injury or death. Nationally, according to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), one in five pedestrian deaths is caused by a hit-and-run driver. According to a 2013 National Public Radio story, Los Angeles and New York have the highest rates of pedestrian deaths from hit-and-runs.
