Tractor-Trailer Crash in Hudson Valley Leaves One Seriously Injured

A rear-end collision between two tractor-trailers left one driver seriously injured and shut down the New York State Thruway in Hudson Valley on Monday.

The accident occurred when the first truck, which was carrying recycled aluminum cans, began to reduce its speed because of an upcoming active construction zone. Police say that this construction zone contained a second, unrelated motor vehicle crash.

As the first vehicle slowed down, a second tractor-trailer traveling at a high rate of speed rear-ended it, causing the back of the truck to lift in the air and come to rest on the cab of the second vehicle which instigated the crash.

The driver of the first vehicle, Charles L. Irish, who is 55 years old, was treated at the scene and released. The driver of the second, 44-year-old Daniel Brodeur, was trapped in the crushed front-end of his own vehicle. Thanks to the efforts of the Cronomer Valley Fire Department, Brodeur was freed from the wreckage. He was then airlifted to Westchester Medical Center with serious injuries, according to police.

Interstate 87 was closed for roughly twelve hours in the aftermath of the crash, re-routing drivers traveling along the road. Part of the reason for this significant delay was the clean-up of the road, which was littered with spilled diesel fuel and items from the loads of the vehicles.

We wish both drivers swift and full recoveries after this violent crash.

Auto accidents which occur on highways, where vehicles are generally travelling at high speeds, can be devastating-and the danger is only heightened when tractor-trailers are involved.

This is, in part, due to the weight of the vehicles. According to a study done by Oak Ridge National Labs, the average tractor-trailer generally weighs anywhere between 33,000 and 80,000 pounds, depending largely on the weight of the load its carrying. This helps explain how enough force could be generated to lift the first truck off the ground.

The incredible mass and force involved in this crash begs the question of what could have happened if the tractor-trailer had rear-ended a smaller vehicle, such as a car or motorcycle. In comparison, a car generally weighs between 3,200 and 6,000 pounds. At the top end of the scale, a large SUV may weigh close to 8,500 pounds. At minimum, this is a difference of roughly 25,000 pounds, illustrating the incredible dangers which are inherent in vehicle collisions.

The injuries that result from these high-intensity accidents can be catastrophic and life-changing. Truck accident victims may suffer from traumatic brain injuries, herniated discs requiring fusion surgery, broken legs (tibia and fibula), torn knee ligaments, amputated limbs, crush injuries causing organ damage, debilitating foot injuries (calcaneus fractures in particular), permanent nerve damage and death.
