Alex Schell, Construction Worker, Injured in Truck Accident on Verrazano Bridge

Wednesday, October 29th, 2014

The New York City attorneys at Block O’Toole & Murphy continue to update you on the latest news involving construction in New York. Unfortunately, many of the current events that we hear about relate to serious construction accidents. Today is no different.

Our law firm is now following a harrowing construction accident involving 61-year-old Alex Schell. Mr. Schell, a construction worker, was working this week on the Verrazano Bridge when he was struck by a truck. The truck was also involved in performing construction work on the bridge.

The incident took place during the early morning hours while it was still dark outside. Emergency personnel raced to the scene and rushed Mr. Schell to Staten Island University North Hospital. Mr. Schell is now being cared for by medical professionals as this piece goes to press and he is said to be in critical condition.

Working construction continues to be the most dangerous job in the world. Despite numerous safety advances and statistical data that support an increasingly safer industry, there are still too many hardhats who experience construction accidents while working under dangerous conditions. The circumstances of this accident will and should be thoroughly investigated.

There are already reports that Mr. Shell was lying on the ground working when the truck struck him. The area should have been properly illuminated and Mr. Schell should have been safeguarded. After all, if you are lying down while working you are in perhaps the most vulnerable position possible. Safety protocols should have been in place to prevent this senseless accident.

Still, this is a hard-working man who has been seriously hurt just because he vowed to get up and go to work that day. The extent of how this event impacts Mr. Schell’s life remains to be seen. Certainly there will be medical consequences both now and in the future. Will he have medical bills? Will he be able to return to work? How will this affect his family? These are all valid inquiries. Our thoughts and prayers go out to him, his family and loved ones. We wish him a speedy recovery.
