Manhattan Tour Bus Accident: 1 Driver Busted

The accident attorneys at Block O'Toole & Murphy are following a serious bus accident that took place this week in bustling Times Square.

Two tour buses collided in Manhattan's Times Square on Tuesday afternoon, causing injuries to passengers taking in the sights of Manhattan. The collision took place at 47th Street and 7th Avenue. How did this violent collision occur?

The New York City Police Department is alleging that one of the two bus drivers was under the influence while driving his bus. William Dalambart, a New Jersey resident, was charged shortly after the nasty collision with driving while his ability was impaired. The substance involved has not yet been revealed. It should be noted that the collision took place early in the morning.

Witnesses claim Dalambart, who was operating a Gray Line Bus, a bus that many New Yorkers are familiar with but few have ever used, crashed into a double-decker City Sights Bus. The initial collision took place very close to the New York landmark location where the TKTS ticket booth is located, the location where many purchase tickets for Broadway shows. Following the initial collision, one of the tour buses struck a large yellow traffic light. The light crashed to the ground, as pedestrians in the busy area scattered. Fortunately the light did not strike anyone.

Emergency personnel from the NYPD and FDNY were on the scene in minutes. 14 people were injured in the collision. While a few of the people are believed to be seriously injured, there were no life-threatening injuries.

Unfortunately, bus accidents in and around New York City are not uncommon. Bus accidents, plainly, are very dangerous. Tour buses, because of their sheer size and the population density in the areas where they typically travel, are even more dangerous. When a tour bus has an accident, it is not happening in the desert. Instead, it is in a place like Times Square, an area with more 'gawkers' per square foot than anyplace on the planet.

The fact that people are everywhere obviously increases the already heightened safety concerns. While it is necessary to wait for the investigation to unfold, one question needs to be asked: How in the world is an impaired bus operator driving a bus full of passengers in Times Square? At 8 a.m.? Can you find a more dangerous scenario than that on our roads? If the allegation is true, Mr. Dalambart deserves to be forcefully prosecuted by the Vehicular Unit of the Manhattan District Attorney's Office.
