Pedestrian Killed in School Bus Accident in Manhattan

The New York City lawyers at Block O'Toole & Murphy have been representing bus accident victims for decades. Today, they bring you a story of a fatal bus accident that occurred yesterday on Manhattan's Upper East Side. The details follow.

An unidentified woman, believed to be in her 40s, was struck and killed by a school bus yesterday afternoon on the Upper East Side. The victim, whose name has not yet been released, suffered severe head trauma and was pronounced dead at the harrowing scene, according to police. There were six children aboard the school bus who were escorted off after the victim's body had been covered, and officials believe all were shielded from the gruesome scene.

The accident occurred at about 3:30p.m., Thursday on Second Avenue and East 93rd Street in Manhattan. The pedestrian victim was believed to be in the crosswalk, crossing Second Avenue when she was struck. "The bus," according to a witness who spoke to the Daily News, "was trying to get through a yellow light before it turned red. The bus driver didn't see the pedestrian. He was looking straight ahead trying to make the light." Reports indicate that the construction barriers, part of the ongoing Second Avenue subway project, played a role in obstructing visibility at the intersection and in the area more generally.

Local councilman Benjamin Kallos, who ran to the scene from his office, located a block away, vowed that he is "committed to Vision Zero" referring to Mayor de Blasio's plan to reduce traffic accidents and fatalities citywide. "This is the second death from a traffic accident in my district in less than a month," Mr. Kallos stated.

The bus involved in the accident was run by a private firm for a non-public school, according to a spokeswoman with the New York City Department of Education. The bus passengers, children ranging from age 5 to 11 who were all students from St. Stephen of Hungary School on E. 82nd Street, were escorted from the bus after firefighters covered the victim's body and made a line to block the victim from view.

The bus driver has not been arrested in connection with the accident. Witnesses report that he was so upset that he collapsed inside the bus and had to be removed by paramedics.

The accident investigation remains ongoing. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim and those that loved her. Whatever the investigation reveals, the grief and pain experienced by the victims and their families will be overwhelming.
