Legal Representation for Accident Victims with Spinal Cord Injuries

Spinal cord injuries are most commonly caused by trauma, or a sudden blow to the spine. This severe impact can damage the spinal cord, which can be severed, fractured, crushed or bruised. Depending on the level of vertebra impacted, the spinal cord damage can result in quadriplegia or paraplegia. Individuals with spinal cord injuries are likely to face daily challenges, mounting medical expenses and the possibility of future medical complications.

Types of Spinal Cord Injuries

When the spinal cord is damaged, the vertebrae may become fractured or dislocated. This can result in swelling and may lead to paralysis. When the swelling lessens, the patient may regain use of their limbs and extremities.

However, other patients may suffer from life-long paralysis. There are two main types of paralysis:

  • Paraplegia is a type of paralysis which causes a loss of feeling and movement in the lower part of the body.
  • The other main form of paralysis, quadriplegia results in a loss of movement in the arms and legs.

Physical therapy and rehabilitation is often recommended for patients with spinal cord injuries. Unfortunately, even with treatment, some patients will never fully recover from their paralysis. Like many personal injuries, particularly incomplete paralysis, the injured victim may need years to recover after their initial accident. In the best case scenario, the injured victim will regain full movement and sensation, though others will never fully recover.

Financial Costs of Spinal Injuries

According to the Foundation for Spinal Cord Injury Prevention and Cure, the average lifetime cost for a patient who suffered paraplegia at age 25 is nearly $1 million. For patients with quadriplegia, the cost for lifetime treatment ranges between $1.5 million and $3 million. These figures do not take into account lost wages or other financial losses resulting from paralysis.
