Will Proposal to Reduce Fatal Traffic Accidents With Speed Cameras be Approved?

For the better part of a year, the New York attorneys at Block O'Toole & Murphy have been monitoring proposals that politicians have tossed out regarding pedestrian safety and the reduction of traffic fatalities. Now, it appears the talk will start to be replaced by action. Based on numerous media reports and comments by city and state politicians, an oft-discussed speed camera proposal sounds like it is about to become a reality.

Governor Cuomo and legislative leaders did not get to address Mayor De Blasio's ambitious 'Vision Zero' plan in the State budget that passed on Monday. However, word in Albany is that components of 'Vision Zero' will be addressed in the coming weeks.

Mayor De Blasio's 'Vision Zero' program includes a proposal to add 160 speed cameras to cut down on pedestrian traffic fatalities. Currently the City has only 20 cameras and can't add more without authorization from Albany. De Blasio wants the city to have more authority to regulate speed and deploy more camera enforcement measures to cut pedestrian traffic deaths to zero.

Why? The theory goes that these cameras and the enforcement of traffic violations that coincides with the cameras will have a dramatic impact on reducing serious traffic collisions. This seems to make perfect sense.

Why the concern? In 2013 alone nearly 286 people died in New York City traffic accidents. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of injury-related death among New Yorkers younger than 14 and the second-leading cause of injury related deaths among New York's seniors. If the efforts to reduce fatalities succeed, Vision Zero could conceivably serve as a national model. If nothing else, it should save lives.

The shock and pain of a motor vehicle accident can be overwhelming to victims and their families. As a law firm that only handles serious personal injury cases, we have seen how a significant collision can devastate a victim and their family. A victim in a serious collision can be killed or sustain lifelong, serious injuries. The crippling injuries can have an unforeseen impact. The injuries can obviously cause a lifetime of severe pain. They also can lead to mounting medical bills and an inability to work. All of this adds considerable stress to a person's life, often resulting in emotional injuries that are often just as serious as the physical injuries. If 'Vision Zero' makes an impact on the frequency of these collisions then it will change the course of the lives of many New Yorkers.

If you or a loved one has been involved in a motor vehicle accident, whether as a pedestrian, driver or a vehicle passenger, you have legal rights.
