New Jersey Building Accident Kills Construction Worker

The danger of construction work was highlighted by a recent fatal worksite accident in Maplewood, New Jersey. A building collapse send a worker into the basement at Coda Kitchen and Bar, causing his death.

The accident occurred last Friday around 9 AM, according to Maplewood mayor Victor De Luca. The worker was one of several from the Edison company HNK Services working on a staircase in the restaurant. The restaurant had wanted to install the staircase for sometime so that employees would not be forced to go outside the building to access other floors.

Other people were in the restaurant when the accident occurred. One worker was taken to University Hospital in Newark in serious condition, although his injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

Another construction worker, not identified by authorities, was taken to University Hospital in Newark with non life-threatening injuries, Mr. DeLuca said. Another worker was in the building but was uninjured, as was the restaurant manager.

The man who died and the worker transported to the hospital were trapped under debris that fell when the floor caved in. A fire department spokesperson said that masonry gave way, sending the floor into the basement. It was unknown whether the construction work or some other problem caused the masonry to fail.

The incident caused no damage to the exterior of the building, although it was condemned and closed. It will not reopen until an engineer certifies that no danger of further collapse exists.
