Suspended Driver Hits Upper East Side Pedestrian

A van with North Carolina license plates hit a pedestrian on the Upper East Side in Manhattan Thursday. The victim, a 66-year-old woman who uses a cane, was run over at Madison Avenue and East 98th Street this morning.

The van that hit the woman, a silver Town and Country, was making a left turn from East 98th Street onto Madison Avenue when it collided with the victim, throwing her up in the aid and then driving over her. The driver stopped after feeling the impact and hearing passersby screaming.

Witnesses said that the victim was unconscious and that her face was swollen. They said that blood was coming from her ears as they tried to find ID in her purse. A worker from Mt. Sinai Hospital, located in the same block, helped carry the woman to the hospital entrance. She is listed in critical condition.

The victim was in the crosswalk when she was struck around 9:50 a.m. yesterday morning according to police and FDNY reports.

The driver was arrested for driving with a suspended license. He also received a summons for failing to yield to a pedestrian.

Whether the mayor's initiative to end pedestrian accidents, Vision Zero, would prevent incidents such as this is unknown. The driver of the van apparently said that he did not see the woman in the crosswalk. Is this the type of accident that will always happen, no matter how many street design reforms are enacted?
