Queens Has Most Fatal Pedestrian Accidents in 2013

In a year of high pedestrian deaths, the Borough of Queens has the highest number of fatalities in 2013. There were 46 pedestrian deaths in Queens from January through November 2013 and that doesn't even include accidents in December. Citywide, the number of fatal pedestrian accidents was the highest since 2008.

A related news item is that the Bronx, although it did not see the most fatal accidents, had the greatest increase in the number of accidents, which rose from 17 in 2012 to 32 in 2013. Citywide, fatal pedestrian accidents increased by 53 percent.

A large number of the fatal pedestrian accidents occurred on Queens Boulevard. At least five people were killed on the wide, fast street. Another dangerous corridor in Queens is at 21st Street and the RFK Bridge in Astoria. Mayor De Blasio called the increase in pedestrian deaths an "epidemic" as he spoke in Woodside, Queens to announce his focus on pedestrian safety.

Although Queens saw the greatest overall increase, and the Bronx had the fastest increase, Brooklyn actually had a reduction in fatalities. In 2013, there were five fewer fatalities in Brooklyn than in 2012.

Despite the mayor's very public push to reduce pedestrian fatalities, 2014 has not started well. In the first 12 days of the year, seven people were hit and killed by motor vehicles. If the rate of pedestrian deaths continues, 2014 will on track to see a record number of fatalities. Whether Queens will once again see the largest number in the city remains to be seen.
