$4,000,000 for a steamfitter injured after becoming entangled in a water pump

The accident occurred on May 15, 2001 at approximately 12:00a.m. at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx. The plaintiff a steamfitter was insulating a chill water pump when his shirt sleeve and/or pony tail became entangled with a spindle on the pump which was not shrouded. The spindle was moving at an extremely high rate of speed and pulled the plaintiff's head, neck, shoulder and chest into the machine, causing severe burns.

The plaintiff's expert established that the failure to shroud the spindle in question was negligent and that the defendants had a duty to maintain the premises in a safe manner.

The case settled just before trial for $4,000,000.

The case was handled by Daniel P. O'Toole.
