Helping Victims of Defective Transvaginal Mesh Products

Should an individual become diagnosed with pelvic organ prolapse or stress urinary incontinence, one of the most common treatment options is to utilize a pelvic/bladder support product, such as a transvaginal mesh; this is an implantable plastic device that is used with stitches to support the organs in a woman's pelvic region. During surgery, the mesh is placed against the vaginal wall to provide support to the damaged area. Transvaginal mesh has been used as a form of treatment since the late 1990's.

Only now, that treatment option is seriously being questioned by experts across the country. Indeed, over the past few years, concerns have emerged regarding the implantation of transvaginal mesh products. Many of the concerns have focused on the utility of the products as well as the information that was made available to the doctors and consumers that were contemplating using the product. Recent studies have demonstrated less than optimal results.  In fact, it has been reported that more than 15% of women who underwent this surgery have experienced unanticipated complications, like erosion.    Erosion, one of the more common complications, occurs when the mesh used during the surgical procedure begins to protrude through a woman's skin, an obviously painful and equally frightening experience.  This may lead to a buildup of scar tissue that renders it difficult, if not impossible, to remove the mesh, compounding the suffering of an innocent woman. This is obviously not what anyone signed up for when deciding on this course of treatment.

FDA Now Releasing Information on Common Adverse Side Effects

Over the past few years, the FDA has received over 2700 reports regarding a failed procedure by patients who have had elected to undergo transvaginal mesh surgery. There are undoubtedly countless failures that remain unreported. Innocent victims have every right to be concerned, particularly since the FDA has not yet discovered which characteristics put some patients at a higher risk for transvaginal mesh complications. However, contributing factors may include the patient’s general health, the type of mesh material, the size of the transvaginal mesh and the surgical technique. Some of the most common symptoms include the following:

  • Mesh erosion
  • Extreme pain during sexual intercourse
  • Severe pain and infection
  • Bleeding
  • Inflammation
  • Vaginal discharge and scarring
  • Mesh shrinkage, disintegration or extrusion
  • Perforations of the bladder, bowel or blood vessels
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Recurrence of pelvic organ prolapse and stress urinary incontinence

While reviewing the literature regarding these procedures, it was discovered by the FDA that those who chose this over the more traditional methods experienced a significant increase in the risks that they faced. There is also strong reason to believe that the mesh procedures offered little to no benefit when compared with what was previously available employing the traditional treatment methods.  If so, there seems to be one lone motivating factor:  money was more important than patient safety.

Due to this, the FDA has released several warnings and has even strengthened previous ones that were not as informative. This included a recommendation that physicians fully inform their patents about the risks associated with surgeries of this nature. They are also to monitor all patients and immediately remove the mesh should it be determined that the patient is suffering from adverse side effects. It has been recommended that this procedure be considered "experimental" and only to be used as a last resort.  Why? The benefits did not outweigh the hazards and risk of serious injury.   Treatment of transvaginal mesh side effects include additional surgical procedures, intravenous therapy, blood transfusions and drainage of abscesses. Victims of this unsafe product deserve to be compensated for what they have unfairly endured.
