Prevent Boating Accidents

The attorneys at Block O'Toole & Murphy want you to be ready for the summer with a boater safety primer to avoid boating accidents.

As the weather continues to heat up, many families and friends will be enjoying New York's many waterways on their boats. With the summer months nearly upon us, it is imperative, whether you are a boat operator or just a passenger, to be aware of important boating safety tips that can keep your friends and family safe. In fact, last week May 23-27, 2014 was National Safety Boating Week, which was created to provide a larger awareness of boating safety.

A common cause of boating accident is driver inexperience and lack of appropriate safety equipment on board. These following tips will help ensure you have a safe and fun boating experience:

  • The operator of the boat should have the appropriate boating license and attended boating operation and safety courses (More information on boater safety and education can be found at the following link to the New York State Office of Parks and Recreation:http://www.nysparks.com/recreation/boating/education.aspx)
  • The operator should know how to navigate certain waterways that may have buoys or other guideposts in place to direct boat traffic
  • All boats should be operated at a safe and cautious speed especially in busier waterways where watersports such as water skiing and tubing that involve passengers being attached to the boat by rope lines.
  • Boats should be equipped with more life jackets than passengers.
  • All passengers, regardless of their swimming skills, should wear life jackets.
  • Appropriate lighting must be available and in working condition on the boat.
  • Navigation devices, if available, should be used.
