Bridge Construction Ready to Begin: Monster Crane Arrives

The New York City lawyers at Block O'Toole & Murphy continue to bring our readers developments that are taking place in the construction world. One recent story that grabbed our attention was the arrival of a massive crane to help in the construction of the Tappen Zee Bridge.

One of the largest floating cranes in the world, measuring larger than the size of a football field, has arrived in the Port of New York and New Jersey to facilitate the construction of the new Tappan Zee Bridge which will begin this spring.

Dubbed the "I Lift NY Super Crane" by officials in Albany, the boom of the crane itself is taller than a football field. Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a statement, "The I Lift NY super crane can lift the equivalent of 12 Statues of Liberty at once, and its ability to lift huge modular components of the new bridge into place and to help dismantle the old bridge will reduce construction time by months and reduce project costs by millions of dollars."

The new Tappan Zee Bridge will be constructed on land and then assembled by the crane which will help contractors save money in the construction project. The bridge's scheduled completion is 2018.

When sizeable construction projects are in the works, people naturally focus on the safety of the undertaking. The Tappen Zee project is an ambitious one, both in size and scope. We hope there is also a strong commitment to doing the job safely.

Each year, workers in New York City are injured in crane-related accidents. Most recently, strong wind gusts from Hurricane Sandy caused a crane to collapse in Midtown in October 2012. In 2008 two giant rigs collapsed within two months of each other in Manhattan, killing a total of nine people. Another crane fell and killed a worker in April 2012 at a construction site for a new subway line. These crane accidents led to new safety measures issued by OSHA in 2010 requiring more safety inspectors and expanding training requirements and inspection checklists.

It is crucial that strict safety measures are adhered to when working on construction projects that use cranes. Block O'Toole & Murphy, LLP is a law firm that specializes in protecting the rights of injured construction workers involved in crane accidents. The firm routinely recovers significant results on behalf of injured workers, including more than $700,000,000 in verdicts and settlements for injured victims.
